The Screen Actors Guild announced their nominations for the 2019 SAG Awards this morning. What makes the SAG Awards different than all the other awards given out ahead of the Oscars each year?
They're voted on by members of SAG, which means they're voted on by a lot of actors. That includes a lot of the same actors who are members of the Motion Picture Academy and, therefore, vote on the Oscars. Meanwhile, the Golden Globes are selected by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of less than 100 journalists who report for outlets in foreign countries.
That's not to say the SAG Awards are a sure shot. There are nominees for the SAG Awards that don't make it on the Oscars list, and vice versa. But they have a strong track record of both nominating and awarding the actual Oscar acting winners -- moreso than the more popular pre-Oscars awards show, the Golden Globes.
Airing several months after the gold standard of TV awards shows, the Emmys, they're usually more a confirmation in the television categories than something new. However, sometimes the SAG Awards will be able to jump on a new show early.
The SAG Awards are also one of the most fun awards shows to watch. You get the looseness of the Golden Globes ceremony, actors who are genuinely touched at being recognized by their peers before being too overly prepped and jaded at the end of awards season, and it's all in a tight two-hour package.
The SAG Awards air their 25th anniversary ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. Pacific on both TNT and TBS.
