The Thrilling Adventure & Supernatural Suspense Hour
Close your eyes and gather around the radio and listen to tales that will make you cringe or giggle. This Saturday night brings the next monthly installment of The Thrilling Adventure & Supernatural Suspense Hour, a live old-school style radio performance at the M Bar in Hollywood, which according to the fine folks at Workjuice is comprised of "several serialized short-form comedic radio plays as well as standalone pieces, musical numbers, and the occasional magic or variety act." Two of the segments we saw at last month's installment were "Jefferson Reid, Ace American" in all his jingoistic WWII Americana buffoonery or the hard core alcoholic otherworldly antics of the upscale couple Frank and Sadie Doyle in "Beyond Belief."
The evening is complete with a deep-voiced announcer, lots of blatant product placement, a sound effects wizard equipped with all the toots and dings necessary, and plenty of singing. You may even find a special guest star, in addition to the cast of regular performers, including the lovely Paget Brewster, who treated last month's crowd to her velveteen vocal stylings and impeccable delivery as the tipsy Sadie Doyle.
Their next show is this Saturday, December 8th at 8 p.m. at the M Bar. The evening's special guest stars will be Tom Kenny(Spongebob Squarepants), Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and Rider Strong(Boy Meets World) and musical guests, Common Rotation (who will also play a set after the show). Finally, The Dust Bowl Cavalierswill perform a set of their rockabilly awesomeness.
You'll want to contact the M Bar to make a dinner reservation, because that is the only way to guarantee a seat. (Trust us on this one, or you'll wind up sitting off to the side with a stranger and getting stuck with an ass-view of the performers all night.) And even though it's radio, you don't really want to miss the actors' mugging. The food at the M Bar is decent, and there's a $10 per person minimum but there's plenty of booze on the menu to help you hit that modest goal. Get there early, because parking can get chaotic in the valet-only strip mall lot. The door fee and the restaurant are separate. You do not need to make reservations for the show itself, but people with restaurant reservations are let in first. The admission for this month's show is $10.
