I realize there are a million choices on a given weekend night, but I think it's worth your while to play a little "LAist's Tonight In Rock Roulette" once in a while. Close your eyes and jab your finger at the screen - whatever you land on is what you attempt to attend.

This walk on the wild side might have led you to Spirit Animal and Kozmonaut at the Echo last Friday, which was freakishly under-attended given the awesomeness of the musicianship.

Opener's Kozmonaut started the night with the front-woman bringing a rebel yell inversely proportional to her pixie stature. After I pulled the ear plugs out and the crowd stopped headbanging, I shared a drink with Steve Cooper, aka Gray Kid. If you're familiar with the earlier material, you'll be delighted to find he's still bringing the same energy and vocals to the stage, but with a lovely (and well chiseled) backing band that has allowed for a new and different take on something to dance to. And while I didn't see it that night, I suspect the ladies are still throwing their underthings on stage. Good to know some things stay the same.
