'Sideways' Hits the Stage, Complete With Wine Tastings

Sideways, the film about two wine geeks galavanting through Santa Ynez wine country for a bachelor party, somehow managed to jab at the ridiculousness of wine geekery and boost the cred of the Central Coast wine regions, all at the same time. Nearly every time we venture to a tasting, up North or otherwise, there's always some sort of reference to the film that was based on Rex Pickett's novel.
And it's no wonder. The film wrangled an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, four NY Film Critics Circle Awards, a SAG Award, and six IFP Independent Spirit Awards in 2004.
Well, Pickett has adapted his novel into a play, and the Ruskin Group Theatre Co. in Santa Monica is extending its performance. Of course, the show comes along with tastings from wineries like Sonoma Coast Vineyard, Dunstan Wines, Sharp Cellars, Silver Mountain, Carlton Cellars, Domaine Gerbuaut, Gioia, Willamette Valley Vineyards, Bouchaine Vineyards, Roots Wines, Leucadia Red, Waits-Mast Family Cellars, Alysian. They'd just better not be serving any of that god awful Merlot. Miles would definitely not approve.
Sideways will continue on, showing Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. through October 28.
