Meiko & Priscilla Ahn @ Hotel Cafe, 1/23 & 1/24/08

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Local singer/songwriters Meiko (MySpace) and Priscilla Ahn (MySpace) share similar qualities -- they are part-Asian (Meiko is quarter-Japanese and Ahn is half-Korean), and originally from back east (Meiko from Georgia and Ahn from Pennsylvania). So perhaps it was coincidental that both were booked in back-to-back shows last week at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, with Meiko onstage last Wednesday and Ahn last Thursday.

Meiko, a one-time Hotel Cafe waitress, became a favorite of controversial gossip blogger Perez Hilton last July, and her MySpace page suddenly exploded in popularity. Her songs have since been featured on Grey's Anatomy and Moonlight, and she released her self-titled album last September. On February 19th, she'll appear on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic as well as the Hotel Cafe that evening. Meanwhile, Ahn, who opened for Joshua Radin on his recent American tour, had one of her songs featured in the film Disturbia, and her full-length album is scheduled for release through Blue Note Records later this year.

Opening for Meiko was Emily Wryn (MySpace), with Buddy (MySpace), WAZ (MySpace), and Colin Armstrong (MySpace) following afterward. And opening for Priscilla Ahn were Anita Athavale (MySpace) and The Bowmans (MySpace), with John West (MySpace) and The Elevators following afterward.

Both Meiko and Ahn will be on the upcoming Hotel Cafe Tour, which locally runs through the Belly Up Tavern in San Diego on March 6th, the Stateside Restaurant and Lounge in Santa Barbara on March 7th, the House of Blues in Anaheim on March 8th, the Hotel Cafe on March 9th, and concluding at the Henry Fonda Theatre on April 12th -- that being said, Meiko's only local show as part of the tour will be at the Henry Fonda Theatre, while Ahn is only scheduled for four shows on the East Coast. Tickets for the Hotel Cafe show are already sold out, but are still available for the Henry Fonda Theatre show.

Special thanks to Meiko, Priscilla Ahn, and the Hotel Cafe.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
