Before you read more...
Dear reader, we're asking you to help us keep local news available for all. Your tax-deductible financial support keeps our stories free to read, instead of hidden behind paywalls. We believe when reliable local reporting is widely available, the entire community benefits. Thank you for investing in your neighborhood.

Next week, it's time to bust out your big two-wheeler and celebrate your freedom to ride. That's right -- it's LA's 17th annual bike week, during which the city will encourage riding, celebrate new programs designed to make biking easier and offer up some incentives for you to hit the pavement on your Schwinn instead of your Honda. The event will kick off with a press conference downtown on Monday morning. You can get all the deets about the event at Metro's website, but here are some highlights:

May 17 - Blessing of the Bikes: Get yer ride right with the lord at the Good Samaritan Hospital on Wilshire Blvd
May 18 - Downtown LA Bike Ride, leaving from downtown at 8:00 am
May 19 - Bike to Work Day, in honor of which some public transportation providers will offer free rides to those with bikes/helmets
May 20 - Bike to School Day
