'Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' Gives LA Dirt Cheap Gas, Food, Hotel Rooms, Makeovers And More

Amazon wants those Emmys real bad.
The '50s-set The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is nominated for 20 Emmys, and in Amazon's latest publicity stunt for the show, they're naming Thursday "Maisel Day" in Los Angeles. That means you get 1959 pricing at dozens of L.A. businesses, from 50 cents for a burger and fries at Mel's Drive-In to a $2.50 makeover at Blushington. So Amazon's basically creating an entire city of one-day pop-ups, as businesses get into the vintage spirit.

"For a show that premiered six months ago, how are we going to get people talking about it?" Amazon awards director Debra Birnbaum asked.
Thursday just happens to be the first day of final-round Emmy voting. But Amazon's attempts to woo Emmy voters are trickling down to the rest of us.
All those Maisel deals are walk-in only -- no reservations, so grab them while they're hot, and maybe bring a book and a nosh for potential long waits.

One of the most immersive experiences comes with Maisel Day at the Hollywood Improv. The show itself will be set in 1959, so wear your finest, but maybe avoid pulling a Midge and drunkenly getting on stage after your husband cheats on you. You'll get $1 admission, though there's still a two-item minimum that we're guessing won't be at 1959 prices.
If you want to become Mrs. Maisel yourself, go get primped on the cheap. There are manicures, makeovers, haircuts, shoe shines, and more on offer. Drybar locations throughout the L.A. area promise that Mrs. Maisel-inspired look, so if you don't mind having a '50s coif, give it a shot. Starring by Ted Gibson is offering a Mrs. Maisel haircut, in case you want something that's even more permanent.
"I'm not sure what they're going to do with my curly mop of hair," Amazon's Birnbaum joked. So, it's an experiment for everyone.

In the food realm, you'll get some delightful desserts along with deli classics around town. Perhaps most appropriately, Canter's has a Maisel pastrami sandwich for just 99 cents -- a sandwich they've already offered before, thanks to the show's deep deli connections. Other specifically Maisel-themed items include Mrs. Maisel rose coffee at Philz and a Mrs. Maisel deli-style turkey sandwich at Deluca's Italian Deli.
If you want a staycation, both the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and the Sportsmen's Lodge Hotel are offering one-night stays for just 40 bucks. It may not be as swank as a Catskills summer at theSteiner Mountain Resort, but you can dress up like it is and have your perfect '50s cosplay moment at one of these two authentically old-school venues.

And good news, Westsiders: Maisel's answer to gas price complaints is 30 cents per gallon -- but only at the Chevron in Santa Monica. The deal caused some chaos -- Santa Monica police reportedly shut down the promotion, citing traffic issues, but it was later reopened, ABC7 reports.
Will this all be worth it for Amazon? They'll find out at the Emmys on Sept. 22 when they discover if they'll take home awards ranging from Outstanding Comedy Series to any of four acting nominations (including two nominations in the supporting actress category).
"As much as the show is about a woman finding a voice in the world, we wanted to make sure that the show had a voice during a very competitive Emmy campaign," Birnbaum said.
They won in multiple comedy categories last year, but there's some stiff competition, so it may take some hair blowouts to get an Emmys trophy blowout.

There's no release date yet for the third season of the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but based on previous seasons, we're anxiously waiting for late November or early December.
