Cleveland Indians defeat LA Angels 12-3. Angels pitching continued to get battered down on this Independence Day. Drowned by the 92-degree temperature topped with unbearable humidity, Ervin Santana wilted lasting only 1 1/3 innings before getting tagged for eight runs.

LA Dodgers defeat Cincinnati Reds 4-1. The Dodgers now have a 1/2 game lead on the San Francisco Giants.

Carlos Lee Aftermath. After the Dodgers flirted with trading for Houston Astros first baseman Carlos Lee over the weekend, the Miami Marlins ended up getting him according to Buster Olney of ESPN. The Marlins, as with the Dodgers, were one of the clubs that Lee had a contractual no-trade protection. I guess the no state tax trumped his moocows.

Kings Lose Zach Parise. But so did the New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings for that matter. Minnesota native Parise recruited defenseman and former Nashville Predator standout Ryan Suter to sign with the Minnesota Wild with matching 13-year, $98 million contracts. The Kings actually briefly flirted with Parise and dropped out when it looked certain he was going to head to his home state.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our communities. We are free to follow facts wherever they lead and to hold power to account without fear or favor. Our only loyalty is to our readers and listeners and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen Southern California’s communities.
