No matter how hard I stare at my keyboard, I cannot escape the pull of the Oscars. The New Bev welcomes twice-nominated director Jason Reitman for its latest guestival. Since there's no official title for the program (unlike, say, Dante's Inferno or The Wright Stuff), I humbly submit "Broderick: High and Low" for the Friday & Saturday line-up of Ferris Bueller & Election, and "Oh, Oh, It's Magic!" for Sunday's sweet '70s pairing of Shampoo & Boogie Nights. In a parallel universe, Not Quite Hollywood is nominated for best doc, which is enough poetic license to mention the New Bev's midnight screening of Razorback, the greatest killer boar flick in all of Australian cinema (and possibly the world!). Back to reality, Laemmle's continues its morning shows of the actual best doc nominees, while the Egyptian has best just-about-everything-else nominee The Hurt Locker in its intimate Spielberg Theatre.

You can even knock those pesky "Best Short" categories out of your Oscar pool with Shorts International's annual program of animated & live action nominees! Catch each individually at the Nuart, or the whole kitten caboodle (for free) at Melnitz Movies. Keep the shorts coming back at the Bev with The Best of Animation Block Party, sporting several animators as guests and a line-up featuring the end of it all, the beginning of it all, chicken cowboys, a robotic unicorn and more! Then, Echo Park Film Center deploys the 3rd International GI Joe Fest, with a GI Joe Stop Motion Workshop for plotting your own surge. GI Joe Fest 2007 winner Jeff Gurwood supports your troops all the way to a stop-motion mission accomplished. Knowing is half the battle!
