The 6th Annual REDCAT International Children's Film Festival is on this weekend! The festivities begin Saturday with three shorts programs: "Tally Ho: Films That Fly High", a global animation showcase (includes one short w/ subtitles); "Legends Come Alive", with fun-filled fables & twists on tall tales (includes five shorts w/ subtitles); and "Family Matters", featuring families from all over (includes two shorts w/ subtitles).

Sunday features exclusive sneak previews from Nickelodeon & Nick Jr. You know you've always wanted to see Spongebob on the big screen. Each program runs about an hour, suitable for even the fidgetiest of viewers.

In case you missed it, this week also marks William Shatner's 80th birthday. What better way to celebrate with a six-pack of Star Trek at the Egyptian Theatre? Thursday, Star Trek: The Motion Picture screens alongside a roundtable presentation on the series' art direction & effects, featuring vaulted visuals that haven't been seen in 30 years! Friday, George Takei (Sulu for the uninitiated) appears for a Q&A between Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan & Star Trek III: The Search For Spock. Saturday, Walter Koenig (Chekov) sparkles at 70mm screenings of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (set in the land of our sister SFist) & Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Sunday, the series' final frontier is another 70mm print, this time of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, accompanied by that film's director Nicholas Meyer (who also directed Khaaaan! & wrote The Voyage Home).

Continue exploring the outer regions of space with Cinefamily's Phenome-Con, a weekend-long retrospective of '70s pseudo-science, pseudo-spiritual documentaries (and you thought our apocalyptos were bad!). If you're still searching for Spock, the interstellar investigation blasts off Saturday & Sunday afternoons with selections from Leonard Nimoy paycheck hosted TV series "In Search Of". Then delve deep into the bizarre with The Amazing World of Ghosts (which valiantly attempts to tie Victorian spirits to spies from the planet Jupiter) and salute bigfoot hunters everywhere with backwoods dramatization The Legend of Boggy Creek! As the clock strikes midnight on Saturday, strap yourself in for a Journey Into The Beyond. Billing itself as the "Mondo Cane of the supernatural", it's certainly the scuzziest film of the weekend. Then disappear into The Devil's Triangle, narrated by horror legend Vincent Price!

What makes these films so enjoyable today is how the overblown theories & ridiculous re-enactments are all peddled with a straight face, even if the "non-fiction" footage is nearly all staged. A notable exception is Don Como's Unknown Powers, a collection of true documentary shorts on unusual personalities in & around these fringe movements. Inexplicably hosted by Academy-Award winner Jack Palance, Unknown Powers infamously features footage of a pre-Kool Aid Jim Jones and other heebie jeebies. Como joins the Cinefamily & Process Media for a Q&A Sunday evening, following a rare screening of the film.
