Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Have you heard about The Hudson Block Party? Well it’s back for round two on Sunday, May 20th. After last year’s hugely successful but ‘crazy’ year, the organizers have doubled the block party’s capacity and have also brought in bigger musical acts.

Musical acts scheduled thus far include:

White Rabbits, of Montreal (DJ Set), LP, Skeet Skeet, Saint Motel, Chris Kennedy, Adam 12, Haim, Little Hurricane, The Neighbourhood, Will Crimes, DWNTWN, Yellow Alex, Keith 2.0, Steve Lira, Adventure Galley, Max & the Moon, Just Jack, Animals of Kin, Miss Aubrey, Marcelle Voomz, Lola Langusta, and more TBA.

The block party will be Brooklyn’s White Rabbits only West Coast performance this summer before they play Lollapalooza in August so don’t miss out on their electrifying performance.

Check out this live video of their single “Percussion Gun.”

While Of Montreal has always been known for their over-the-top theatrical shows, it’s exciting to consider what the band has in store for their DJ set at the block party. Kevin Barnes never disappoints and if his DJ set at Hudson is only half as fun as this performance of ‘Gronlandic Edit,’ it’s guaranteed to be a good time.

San Diego’s Little Hurricane is gaining a lot of buzz having been named “Best New Artist” in San Diego in 2010. The blues-y duo is currently touring in support of their new album, Homwrecker, which was released May 1st. Check out this awesome performance of “Give em Hell” and get excited to see them at The Hudson!

Another band we’re really excited to see is L.A.’s own Saint Motel. The band makes sunny, upbeat, and catchy pop songs guaranteed to compliment the Block Party atmosphere quite nicely. The video for the song “Puzzle Pieces” was filmed in L.A. and it looks like their shows are super fun but we’ll have to wait till May 20th to find out.

Sponsored by the City of West Hollywood and The Chamber of Commerce, the all-day block party will include over 25 bands/DJs on two stages, 30 vendors, four full bars (21+), several charities, local businesses and organizations. Food from The Hudson and sister establishment The Churchill includes: Short Rib & Fish Tacos, Chicken Sliders, Garlic Parmesan Fries, Grilled Corn on a Stick (with chili, lime and cotija cheese), Grilled Housemade Sausage, Fresh Mint Ice Cream Sandwiches and a selection of Pizzas.

The Block Party doors open at 11am. Tickets will be available at the door for $10 before 2pm and $15 after 2pm. Set-times and lineup additions are forthcoming and will be available via the event’s Facebook page.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
