Chris Cornell @ the Troubadour 01/29/10

How is it possible, after all these years, that the signature growl, hair, and impressive catalog of rock anthems can still seem so fresh and so clean, clean? The Troubadour's small stage was home to Chris Cornell's intimate second solo show in his Songbook series (the first having been a stint at Hotel Cafe back in December), which meant an acoustic journey down memory lane.

Cornell winded around his past, bringing stripped down fan favorites to the standing room only crowd, which had the net effect of feeling both original and familiar. Throw in a handful of laid-bare Beatles and Led Zeppelin covers, a smattering of affable back and forth with the audience, and an "awwww"-inducing profession of love for his wife, and even Tom Hanks (balcony stage left!) couldn't do much more than sit back and take in the voice of Soundgarden, Audioslave, and Temple of the Dog. Like 1993 all over again, but without the flannel and Docs.
