LAist was at the Hollywood Bowl’s 2014 Summer Season kickoff party last night, emceed by LA Phil CEO Deborah Borda and Music Director Gustavo Dudamel. With a number of politicos and arts patrons in attendance, the two made a few announcements that complemented an already diverse lineup this season.

So here are five cool things we learned at last night’s party:

Mark this date: The Neutral Milk Hotel will headline a Sept. 18 show at the Hollywood Bowl, marking the band’s first appearance since 1998 and its only 2014 show in L.A. (Coachella doesn’t count).

And this date, too: Joining already announced Glen Hansard and Iron & Wine bill on Aug. 10 is the Seattle indie-folk outfit Head and the Heart.

When in Hollywood: Gustavo Dudamel has scored his first film, Libertador, a biopic on the South American revolutionary Simón Bolivar. Dudamel conducts the LA Phil at the Bowl on July 31, featuring a suite from Libertador as well as another suite from The Motorcycle Diaries by Gustavo Santaolalla. Clips from both films are screened that evening, too.

Goodbye, splinters: All the benches in the Bowl are being replaced with fresh wood. This is the first refurbishment of the bleachers since 1981.

Speaking of the ‘80s: The Go-Go’s will be inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame on opening night along with Pink Martini. The bands join already announced inductee Kristin Chenoweth, who’ll be inducted by Carol Burnett. (And speaking of Chenoweth, rememberKristin’s memorable duet with an audience member from last year?)

Single tickets for the Hollywood Bowl’s 2014 season go on sale Sunday (May 4) at 10 am. 500 wristbands will be distributed for in-person box office purchases starting at 8 am on Sunday (parking lot opens at 7 am). If you can deal with the service charges, the tickets are available online at HollywoodBowl.com and other outlets, too.
