CSUN Student Melts Down in Library During Finals Week

One year ago, Congress defunded public media. Now that we're 100% community funded, please become a sustaining member or increase your existing membership today.

Remember when you were little and your teacher told you to be quiet, it turned out that the loudest, most obnoxious kid was always the teacher's pet shushing everyone?

Well, this video captures what happens when that kid (sort of) grows up and has a meltdown during finals week in the CSUN library. It's not clear what prompted this one-woman Crusade Against Talking in the Library and Against Disrespecting the One Who Shushes, but there's no way it was any more entertaining (or distracting) as what came after. The user that uploaded it to YouTube crzdcole claims someone else shot the video.

The video starts when someone tells the shusher off: "This isn't a scary movie. You need to calm your dramatic ass down."

The shusher marches back and whisper-yells: "Do not tell me that. It's rude and disrespectful okay? It's finals right now."

The Loud, Disrespectful Table fires back: "Oh hell no!" and that's when things escalate.

Shusher, who has now twice been disrespected, stretches out her arms and asks the entire library — the universe, really — why they can't just be quiet when she's trying to study: "What's wrong with you? What's wrong with you? What is wrong with all of you? What is wrong with all of you?"

Someone points out that she's being a shushing hypocrite, which is really the worst thing you can say to a shusher. She responds: "I'm not being louder than all of you, am I? AM I TALKING LIKE THIS? Can you please just stop talking?" Then it sounds like she might start sobbing but instead she starts banging on something and the video fades to black.

We wish Shusher the best during finals. Hopefully, she'll move on to more effective tactics like looking over her glasses sternly or leaving petty passive-aggressive notes. But if she really wants to go off the deep end, we would like to suggest that she not put together a racist response to loud people in the library on YouTube like some people. In the meantime, it unfortunately looks like Shusher herself is going to be the target of racist bile from YouTubers.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit.
