A California Highway Patrol officer fatally shot a man on the 105 Freeway in Lynwood on Sunday, which led to the 105 Freeway shutting down for several hours.
The L.A. County Medical Examiner identified the man as 34-year-old Jesse Dominguez.
Few details about the shooting were immediately available, but video circulating on social media appears to show an officer struggling with and then shooting an individual several times.
According to a statement from the CHP, an officer arrived on scene around 3:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving several calls about a pedestrian walking against traffic on the westbound Interstate 105 near Wilmington Ave.
In the statement, the CHP said the officer approached the man after making repeated attempts to get him off the freeway.
A struggle ensued and, according to the CHP, the pedestrian “was able to access a Taser he had in his possession, activated the weapon, and used the Taser against the officer.”
A Taser is not clearly visible in the video circulating online [WARNING: The linked video is graphic and may be disturbing for some].
The California Department of Justice said its police shooting investigation team has started looking at the incident in accordance with state law.
The CHP said the officer, who has not yet been identified publicly, has been placed on administrative leave.
When asked Tuesday morning whether officer-worn body camera footage would be released, a CHP spokesperson said no more information was available "at this time" because of the ongoing investigation.
