More rain and snow in store for SoCal

A river filled with rushing water with trees in the background and a car passing over a bridge.
More rain in store but not as strong as yesterday's.

Good morning and happy Friday. We're in for another cold and wet day, but the heaviest part of the storm system has passed.

The roads will remain slick, but rain will be lighter with cooler temperatures today.

Drive safely
  • Here's some advice on driving in the rain:

    • Check weather and road conditions all along your planned route.
    • Slow down.
    • Keep a wider-than-usual distance between your vehicle and the one in front.
    • Don't drive through standing water — as little as 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars, and two feet can carry away SUVs and trucks.
    • Make sure tires are fully inflated.
    • Check windshield wiper blades and replace if necessary.

Daytime highs for L.A. County will range from 48 to 57 degrees, including the Antelope Valley. In Orange County, temperatures will range from 50 to 55 degrees. And for the Inland Empire, temperatures there will range from 43 to 51 degrees. In Coachella Valley temperatures will again range from 60 to 65 degrees.

Snow levels will rise to 4,000 feet by noon, then to the upper elevations by the evening. Only about 3 to 6 more inches of snow is expected.

Looking ahead to the weekend, expect warmer and sunny weather.

High surf over SoCal beaches

The National Weather Service has issued a surf advisory for L.A. and Ventura county beaches warning swimmers and surfers to stay out of the water because of the dangerous conditions. Large breaking waves of 6 to 9 feet are expected in Ventura, and between 5 and 8 feet in L.A. County. The advisory ends at 3 p.m.

L.A. County public health officials are also urging folks to avoid contact with ocean water for the next few days, citing the storm's bacteria-filled runoff.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
