Tonight's lows are in the 50s, in the 40s for Antelope Valley and in the 60s for Palm Desert with breezy conditions.

Taking a look ahead: The National Weather Service forecasts another Santa Ana wind event is expected to come back Tuesday night for northern L.A. County mountains and Wednesday for the Inland Empire and Orange County.

    This day in history

On this day in 1961, the Bel Air Fire, which began as a brushfire, ended up costing $100 million in losses and rampaged through Brentwood and Topanga Canyon, damaging nearly 500 homes and even causing significant damage to local avocado crop. You can read about a fireproof home that has since been built in Topanga Canyon.

    Things to do

It may be Nov. 6, but stores and other capitalist institutions are telling us the holidays are basically here and Mariah Carey has officially defrosted. If you're feeling the holiday spirit, then head over to Santa Monica where a frosty treat awaits:

    • Ice at Santa Monica Skating Rink: The winter adventure by the sea has returned for the season. Glide and skate across 8,000 square feet of pristine ice within four blocks of the Pacific Ocean. The rink, located on the corner of Fifth Street and Arizona Avenue, has been transformed for the holidays. Admission includes skate rental.
    • Or looking to be surrounded by music? Check out: Choir! Choir! Choir! Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman (AKA “DaBu”) started Choir! Choir! Choir! in Toronto as a weekly drop-in singing event in 2011. The goal was to create a night of singing, community and a little comedy. Now they travel the world bringing people together to sing great songs. No experience is needed, just show up and they'll teach you the parts to create a community choir. The theme of this week's show in L.A. is "Dreams," focusing on songs by Fleetwood Mac.

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
