Weather forecasters say this weekend will be very hot and have issued a couple of advisories, plus there's a chance of thunderstorms and rain showers on Sunday. Let's break it down:
About those advisories and monsoon weather
The National Weather Service is issuing a heat advisory for much of the Southland as a dome of hot air from Texas makes its way west — the advisory applies for L.A. and Orange County and takes effect Saturday at 10 a.m. until Sunday night.
Inland valley, desert and mountain areas will be blistering this weekend. Many areas of the Southland are expected to reach triple digit temperatures. They include the mountains of Ventura, Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties, which will be under an excessive heat watch from Saturday morning until Sunday night. The watch also applies for communities along 5 Freeway and Highway 14 freeway corridors.
Forecasters say tropical moisture will bring a 20% chance of thunderstorms and showers Sunday. Here's a glimpse from the NWS San Diego office for Orange County and Inland Empire:
This day in history
On this day in 1997, the WNBA made its debut when the Sparks hosted the New York Liberty at the Forum in Inglewood. L.A. lost by 10 points.
