Heat wave this week brings possibility of triple digit temperatures
A heat wave is expected to start Wednesday and last through Saturday. The peak is expected Thursday with temperatures hitting triple digits in some areas.
The backstory: It’s been a relatively mild summer in Southern California. That’s due to “colder ocean temperatures” which have helped moderate temperatures along the coast, according to the National Weather Service meteorologist Richard Thompson.
But this week all of LA will feel the heat.
Highs this week:
- Valleys: 100 to 110 degrees.
- Deserts: mid-100s.
- Beaches: lower to mid-80s.
Why now: A high pressure system building across the region this week is bringing warming temperatures, clear skies, and lots of sunshine.
Why it matters: July and August are the hottest months of the year and with Thursday's temperatures stretching into the triple digits it brings the threat of heat related illnesses as well as elevated fire weather concerns. Thompson said to make sure to drink plenty of water, limit outdoor activities and check on your neighbors without air conditioning.
