Northern Los Angeles county along the I-5 corridor and the Antelope Valley will be under a red flag warning for potential fire weather from 1 p.m. until 5 a.m. Sunday morning. Low humidity levels and gusty winds up to 65 mph are in store.

What’s up with the wind?

Separately, a wind advisory is in effect until 3 p.m. Saturday for the Antelope Valley Foothills and the I-5 corridor. After 3 p.m., a high wind warning will go into effect for those same areas, including Gorman, Elizabeth Lake, the Tejon Pass, Pyramid Lake, and Lake Palmdale. Wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour are expected for those areas tonight, with speeds averaging 30 to 40 mph for that high wind warning.

Is it fire weather?

All that adds up to the potential for fire weather for those northern parts of the county.

“What’s causing this is moderately low relative humidity values anywhere between 10 to 25%,” National Weather Service meteorologist Devin Black said.

There is increased risk of grass fires, due to the lack of rain and dry brush, with potential for rapid spread from those winds.

The rest of the forecast

Temperatures for most of the region will be 10 to 15 degrees below normal today, highs below 80 in most valleys and 60s to low 70s elsewhere. However, there will be a slight warming trend beginning Sunday through the early half of next week. Inland highs will rise about 10 degrees Sunday, with coastal areas increasing 1 to 3 degrees.

Temperatures will still be a few degrees below normal for this time of year.
