The race to fill Janice Hahn's vacant Los Angeles City Council seat has become the tale of the Officer and an Assemblyman. The two top finishers in last night's special election in CD 15 has resulted in a runoff slated for Los Angeles police officer Joe Buscaino and Assemblyman Warren Furutani.

"Eleven candidates lined up to make a run for the coveted 15th District seat, collectively spending nearly $2million that included independent expenditures and public matching funds," explains the Daily Breeze. There had not been a vacancy in CD15 since Hahn won her seat in 2001.

Early favorites, like Pat McOsker, wound up finishing in the middle of the crowded pack.

The runoff between Buscaino and Furutani is set for January 17, 2012.

The final results, via the City Clerk, are as follows:

Los Angeles - City Council - Special election (Unexpired term ending June 2013)
94 of 94 precincts Votes Pct.

Joe Buscaino 4,751 29.1%
Warren Furutani 3,644 22.3%
