Big Sur Highway One Opens, we get into the latest & hear listeners' PCH memories
Big Sur Highway One Opens, we get into the latest & hear listeners' PCH memories
A 90-mile section of California’s Highway 1 along the famous Big Sur coast fully reopened Wednesday after three years of closures and repairs following a series of landslides and a roadway collapse that hampered tourism on the scenic route. The reopening around midday came three months ahead of schedule, and business owners say that should give travelers plenty of time to plan their spring and summer road trips. The highway is famously a must for California visitors traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Today on AirTalk, we talk about the highway’s reopening with Scott Eades, District 5 Director at the State of California Department of Transportation, which oversees Big Sur Highway 1. We also want to hear from you! What is your favorite spot along the Pacific Coast Highway? Where do you stop to take in the view or grab a quick bite along the California coastline? One Altadena fire survivor on his struggles with home insurance
After the tragic Eaton and Palisades fire, many survivors were relying on their home insurers to have their back — a time they felt their premium payments could pay off. However for many fire survivors, navigating the many forms, deadlines, and fine print of getting their insurer to pay has been a complex and arduous process. Insurers have reportedly violated many provisions with rotating adjusters, ignoring emails and disregarding legally mandated deadlines. Public enforcement of regulatory laws has been seldom and even protections like the California Unfair Insurance Practices Act that was created in 1959 to protect consumers from such tactics has not been enough, according to some. Joining us to share his personal experience is Richard Rieber, an aerospace engineer and Altadena resident whose home was damaged in the fire and recently wrote an opinion piece for CalMatters. We are also joined by David Russell, professor of insurance and finance and director for the center for risk management and insurance at CSU, Northridge for the bird’s eye view.
Women and men’s bodies might be more different than we previously thought
Women’s immune systems function differently from men's. This was evident during the pandemic, when scientists and researchers looked at how women’s bodies responded to the virus versus their male counterparts. While men were more likely to die from COVID-19, women were more likely to get long COVID. Why is this? How are our immune systems different? For starters, women’s immune systems tend to respond more strongly to viral threats, which can have benefits in the short term. But what are the long-term effects, if any? Joining us to discuss is Basmah Safdar, emergency physician and the director of Women’s Health Research at Yale, and Caroline Jefferies, scientific director of the Center for Research in Women's Health and Sex Differences at Cedars-Sinai.
