Residents tasked with naming Long Beach’s newest baseball team
Calling all baseball fans, the folks behind what's currently known as the Long Beach Baseball Club want community members to help name the city’s next minor league team.
For now, the soon-to-be-renamed team would play home games at Blair Field at Recreation Park.
The push to get the community involved comes shortly after the Long Beach City Council unanimously voted last month to partner with Long Beach State and Long Beach Baseball Club officials to bring a new team to Blair Field, where the Long Beach State Dirtbags have played for decades.
How to participate
California residents have until Sept. 26 to submit ideas through the baseball club’s website. Team officials are looking for names not used by any other professional or college sports teams and that reflect Long Beach’s history.
As submissions come in, the team will release AI-generated social videos to bring the top name contenders to life.
“This city has such a rich history in sports, arts, music, and culture and we want the team to reflect that,” Ena Patel, president of the Long Beach Baseball Club, said in a statement. “What better way to ensure that than to have the people of Long Beach build this team with us. We’re excited to see what you all come up with.”
