What Will Recent Big Leadership Changes At Disney and Netflix Mean For Audiences?
Topline:
Two of Hollywood’s biggest film studios have had leadership changes in one week, so we take a look at what’s ahead for audiences.
The details: To start the week, Disney made a change atop their Live-Action and Fox theatrical divisions, installing Searchlight President David Greenbaum to replace Sean Bailey. Over at Netflix, their search for a new film leader ended, with producer and former Warner Brothers executive Dan Lin accepting the role.
The background: Disney is coming off of a year with subpar theatrical results, and the choice of Searchlight’s Greenbaum to change things up as the new leader for those film divisions certainly sends a signal that Disney may keep their approach to use auteur filmmakers like Chloe Zhao and Barry Jenkins to direct big-budget movies, and potentially expand more into original, non-franchise or sequel films in their non-Marvel and Star Wars live-action movie divisions.
For Netflix, they’ve chosen an executive with a very similar career background to their departing film chief Scott Stuber to take over the reins at their film division. Both men had top studio executive positions earlier in their careers, but transitioned to launching production companies and making big studio movies. Lin begins on April 1, so we’ll see if this results in any kind of shift in volume, or types of films Netflix makes as the year progresses.
