Best things to do this weekend in Los Angeles and Southern California: June 27 - 29

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

The new exhibit at the Getty Villa, opening this weekend — almost six months after wildfires encroached on the historic property and destroyed the surrounding area — showcases artifacts found in Messenia, Greece, circa 1400 BC. And looking at the galleries filled with ancient jewelry, swords and tablets, you can’t help but have a little perspective. These objects have endured for thousands of years; they are a testament to human survival. We’ll get through this, too.

Our friends at Licorice Pizza point out that there are some great gigs (as always!) coming up. Friday, Pierce the Veil plays at the Forum, James Blunt is at the Greek; on Saturday, Purple Disco Machine is at Shrine Expo Hall, and The Weeknd spends his weekend at SoFi.

For more to explore, read up on the latest about the Lakers’ sale, find some fine dining deals, and learn how to support downtown businesses since the curfew was lifted. And remember to book your tickets to our July 9 community event marking six months since the L.A. wildfires.

Put on your Pink Ladies jacket or slick back your hair and get ready for some summer lovin’ at the Bowl. The annual Bowl sing-along this year is Grease, which was filmed at some iconic L.A. locations like Venice High School and the Sixth Street Bridge. Check out PBS SoCal’s great feature from Locationland to get in the mood, and then get your pipes ready to belt out favorites like “You’re the One that I Want” and one of the best (and most underrated) movie musical songs of all time, “There are Worst Things I Could Do”. Rizzo forever.

The mayor was on hand to celebrate the reopening of the Getty Villa and welcome people back to the Palisades jewel following January’s devastating wildfires. The new exhibit at the Getty Villa, "Kingdom of Pylos: Warrior-Princes of Ancient Greece," marks the first show since the fires. It was miraculously always scheduled for June and didn’t face a delay. The exhibit includes tablets that show an early form of Greek written language (the curator called them “ancient emojis”), incredibly detailed stone carvings, gold work and more on loan from Greece.

And on the always gorgeous Getty grounds, the gardens are in bloom again. If this is your first time driving up the PCH, brace yourself for seeing the burned-out views on the way, and take care where construction work is ongoing. Limited weekend-only hours for now mean that the always-busy Getty Villa will be even tougher to book tickets for, but be persistent and plan ahead.

Cambodian rock band Dengue Fever hit the free Levitt Pavilion L.A. stage for one of the first concerts of the summer in MacArthur Park. They are joined by Spaghetti Cumbia, Hollywood Hotsteppers and Al Lover’s World Party, so it’s going to be quite the jam! Here’s a taste from KEXP.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
