Best things to do this weekend in Los Angeles and Southern California: October 4 - 6

Just as so many new art shows are opening with the onset of PST ART this fall, others are closing, and it’s your last chance to see the iconic Ed Ruscha exhibit at LACMA, which closes Oct. 6.
This week, I’m really excited about LUMINEX, the projection event that turns downtown’s South Park neighborhood into a living, breathing gallery space at night. Plus, Friday is National Taco Day, with deals abounding for what — and I think we can agree on this — is our city’s favorite food.
For more to explore, visit LAist.com, where you can go on a Cambodian food tour of Long Beach, catch up on the recent DA debate between George Gascón and challenger Nathan Hochman on the Imperfect Paradise podcast, and learn what’s behind all those posters advertising nurse assistant training.

The 17th Door Haunt Experience
-
The 17th Door
8420 On the Mall, Buena Park
I will admit that a haunted house promising 34 minutes of "psychological terror" is not my cup of tea, but taking an informal poll, it’s clear I’m in the minority when it comes to Halloween fun. So for those of you who want the you-know-what scared out of you, head to the 17th Door Haunt Experience in Buena Park for exactly that – a terrifying evening at the Perpetuum Penitentiary.

Prepare to be wowed and see downtown in a whole new way. That’s how I felt at the first Luminex in Sept. 2021. Just as we were coming out of our pandemic hibernation, Luminex was one of the first public events I went to and it totally blew me away. The walls of downtown buildings were illuminated with projection and sound art, people were actually out and about, talking, walking, pointing and experiencing art together again. It was beautiful. And after a year off, Luminex is back this fall with artists including Refik Anadol (who just announced his AI art museum will be opening in L.A. in 2025), Alice Bucknell’s The Alluvials, Sarah Rara, Carole Kim and more. Don’t miss it.

Mi casa es su casa — if the mi in question is Quentin Tarantino, that is. Pulp Fiction is turning 30. Let’s not talk about how old that makes any of us, but do take the chance to screen it at the revival theater that Quentin Tarantino himself took over in 2021. Taco Day Deals

Multiple Locations
It seems nearly everywhere is participating in some kind of National Taco Day deal on Oct. 4, but here are a few that stand out:
- We can argue about whether this is actually a taco, but the elevated taco menu at The Roof at the West Hollywood Edition hotel features WeHo Choco Tacos with vanilla ice cream and spiced milk chocolate.
- Guerrilla Tacos chef Wes Avila celebrates the day at his Yucatan-inspired spot Ka’teen with the shrimp dish Tacos Governado.
- XRG group establishments (Acapulco, Chevys, El Torito, SOL, Sinigual, and Solitas restaurants) are offering $2 margaritas all day.
- Puesto’s Orange County locations have a promotion where you could win a $50 gift card on National Taco Day – just look under your three-taco meal plate!

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.
Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.
We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.
Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.
Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
