Best things to do this week in Los Angeles and Southern California: November 11 - 14

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Wildfire season came in with a whoosh, didn’t it? Stay safe and let’s hope that this week brings a respite from the winds. If you’re still a bit hungover from election coverage, maybe shift your focus to some of the positives locally – like the Fernando Valenzuela mural that just went up – and set our sights on all the great things we have going on in Los Angeles.

Readers of this column know I’m a big musical theater fan, so I couldn’t be more excited about Jason Alexander (whom I last saw on stage in The Producers at the Pantages many moons ago) coming not to one of the major stages in town, but to La Mirada for a special run of Fiddler on the Roof. It was the first show I saw as a kid and it has so many timeless songs. Beyond the stage, '90s rockers Soul Asylum are doing a free in-store show at Amoeba, there's a very timely (too timely for some of us, perhaps) talk about democracy’s future with journalists at the Central Library, and I have lots of Thanksgiving planning for you in the dining section.

For more to explore, visit LAist.com, where you can follow the key still-undecided races in California, learn about Godzilla’s L.A. connection, and get tickets to our LAist event next weekend with David Sedaris at the United Theatre on Broadway.

L’Chaim! Jason Alexander (Seinfeld, The Producers) leads this special run of Fiddler on the Roof at La Mirada Theatre. Taking on the role originated by Topol on Broadway, Alexander steps in as the village elder, seeing his Jewish family through hardship, change, and love in rural Anatevka. Fun fact: Fiddler was the first musical I ever saw (I was 7), so let’s say it’s good for all ages!

Oof, it’s been quite a week, hasn’t it? If you need to process what’s going on with politics in this country, the Library Foundation of Los Angeles (LFLA) is hosting a special post-election event that brings together political strategists, journalists, and academics to discuss the pressing question — “Where is our Democracy Now?” The panel will be moderated by journalist and author Todd Purdum, with guests Elaina Plott Calabro (The Atlantic), Adam Nagourney (The New York Times), and Brianna Tucker (The Washington Post), the conversation will take a measured view and analysis of the current climate.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
