Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

Each week, we bring you a few TV shows that are worth checking out.

Marcus Jones, awards editor for TV & Film at IndieWire, and Jen Chaney, television critic for Vulture, joined AirTalk, LAist 89.3's daily live news program, to share what shows they're loving right now.

Evil

A priest, a psychologist, and a tech expert of sorts work with the Catholic Church to investigate "abnormal" events. Come for the supernatural vibes and stay for the dark humor. The show is in its fourth and final season.

"There's been this long-running plot thread about whether one of the main character's eggs that she donated is going to be used to give birth to the Antichrist — it seems like it's going to happen this season." —Jen Chaney, Vulture

When & where: Episode one is available on Paramount+. Episodes release every Thursday.

Top Chef

In its 21st season, chefs compete in culinary challenges to wow a panel of judges. The dazzling dishes aren’t the only things that are fresh — former contestant Kristen Kish takes over for Padma Lakshmi as host, plus there are some interesting (and controversial) changes to the judging format.

“You become so invested. I joke that every season somehow makes me cry.” —Marcus Jones, IndieWire

When & where: Episodes release on Bravo every Wednesday at 6 p.m. Pacific Time and are available to stream on Peacock.

We Are Lady Parts

The comedy returns for season two following a Muslim female punk band called Lady Parts with an unlikely lead guitarist. And get this ... the music is actually good.

“Whatever stereotypes we often see about Muslim women, it completely upends all of them.” —Jen Chaney, Vulture

"Nida Manzoor, who also directed Polite Society, she's such an exciting, comedic voice. I would just watch anything she does." —Marcus Jones, IndieWire

When & where: Episodes premiere Thursday, May 30 on Peacock.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
