AirTalk Nov. 6, 2026

One year ago, Congress defunded public media. Now that we're 100% community funded, please become a sustaining member or increase your existing membership today.

Today's show: AirTalk Friday host Austin Cross discusses the LAPD and policing under Mayor-elect Nithya Raman, something that's out of style but you still love, the L.A. Chocolate Festival and FilmWeek. Cross is also LAist's local Morning Edition host.

What will policing in LA look like under Nithya Raman?

As Nithya Raman officially becomes Los Angeles' next mayor, a lot of folks will be looking at what’s next for the Los Angeles Police Department. She's said she would like to maintain the size of the workforce and it's unclear where she stands on firing LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell. Today on AirTalk, we dig into what Mayor-elect Raman has proposed and what might come to fruition with Jim Newton, lecturer of public policy at UCLA.

What’s something that’s out of style that you still swear by?

It’s cringe to be off trend — that’s just how it is. But to be cringe is to be free, no? Living life authentically sometimes requires you to be a little cringe. Just because mason jars are out of fashion doesn’t mean you have to suddenly throw your collection out. We discuss embracing the cringe with Misty Sidell, design columnist for The Wall Street Journal.

The LA Chocolate Festival

This weekend is the L.A. Chocolate Festival, a two-day event that’ll bring local chocolate artisans and lovers together to appreciate the variety of cacao-centric confections. We talk to the festival’s head event coordinator, Brian Cisneros, and Kala Maxym, chief chocolate officer at the Chocolate Dispensary in Echo Park.

One year ago, Congress voted to defund public media, eliminating a critical $1.7 million from our budget every year going forward. But they couldn’t silence us, and we’re not going anywhere. LAist is now 100% community funded and that means we’re taking our future into our own hands and turning to you to keep local reporting strong.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our nonprofit newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit.
