Free weekend? Happy Day LA, Amoeba sidewalk sale and CicLAvia
Can you feel that breeze? It's the cool temps calling your name. The heat wave is over just in time for a weekend of outdoor activities. We're getting happy with Mayor Eric Garcetti on Friday followed by Amoeba's sidewalk sale on Saturday and a Sunday Funday at CicLAvia in the San Fernando Valley.
Here's everything you need to know:
1. Happy Day L.A.
(Photo: Senorhorst Jahnsen via Flickr)
Did you know L.A. has an official Day of Happiness? Mayor Garcetti has endorsed March 20, originally sanctioned as the International Day of Happiness by the United Nations, as L.A.'s happy holiday. To celebrate, Happy City L.A. is partnering up with the United Nations Association SoCal Division and other organizations to throw Live. Work. Play [Happy], an evening of live performances, spoken word, food trucks and giveaways. It'll all take place at Art Share, a vibrantly graffitied space in the Arts District.

5. Karaoke at The Line Hotel
You may have heard of Good Times at Davey Wayne's, the '70s-themed bar in Hollywood. (In order to enter, you have to open a refrigerator door.) Get excited because the guys behind it, the Houston Brothers, have got a new spot. It's called Break Room 86 — an '80s karaoke bar at the Line Hotel in Koreatown.
Once inside, you're in an underground New York dance club from the '80s. There are old stacked TVs playing "Garfield," "The Ghostbusters" and "Rainbow Brite" highlighting the dance floor, a DJ booth with a special area for friends — and a wall completely covered in tapes.

6. Let there be poppies
(Photo: Stuart Palley for KPCC)
Earlier this week, we reported that some of the poppies at Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve in Lancaster had been fried due to the heat wave. We posted about it on Facebook and tons of people responded with living, breathing poppies! Many of the poppies were destroyed, but we are happy to report that tons of flowers remain. You should head there for a field trip if you want to see poppies — but also goldfield, forget-me-nots, gold cups and more!
