'Precious' honored at the 36th Annual Humanitas Prizes
Morality in media merited recognition at the 36th annual Humanitas Prizes. The subject matter of this year’s honorees ranges from gritty to gleeful
The $10,000 awards honor TV and movie scripts that exalt human dignity. One script that overcame conceptual and marketing challenges to reach mainstream audiences was “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.” Its screenwriter, Geoffrey Fletcher, won a Humanitas Prize to accompany his Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Other Humanitas winners included the writers of the screenplay for “Winter’s Bone,” and the people who wrote the pilots of the TV shows “The Good Wife,” “Modern Family” and “Nurse Jackie.” The HBO movie “Temple Grandin” and an episode of the comedy “Glee” also won awards during the ceremony in Beverly Hills.
The Humanitas Prizes are the brainchild of the late Father Ellwood Kieser, a Catholic priest who produced the weekly syndicated TV series “Insight” and encouraged entertainment industry writers to incorporate humane values into their work.
