Woodland Hills high school wins state academic decathlon
El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills won this week's California Academic Decathlon, beating 61 other teams from across the state.
The team from El Camino Real now advances to the national competition next month. The Decathlon tests students' knowledge in ten areas, including literature, music and art. But Michael Walker, a member of the El Camino Real team, says it's not only about academics.
“The Academic Decathlon actually pushes the kids to think about themselves with categories such as speeches and interviews so it’s definitely much broader than simply memorizing a lot of material,” said Walker.
The U.S. Academic Decathlon is scheduled for April 21-24 in Omaha, Neb. El Camino Real's decathlon team has won five national championships since 1991.
