A 16-year-old boy was shot walking home from school with his friend this afternoon.

The shooting happened around 3 p.m. The suspect came from behind, walked in front of the pair and then turned around and shot the boy, police told the OC Register.

The 16-year-old boy was hit once in the upper torso and his friend made it out unscathed. He tried to bring his wounded friend home but paramedics got there first. The boy was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, but it's not clear whether his injuries were life-threatening, City News Service reported.

Witnesses described the suspect as a Hispanic male who is about 5'7" with a stocky build. He was described as wearing a black hoodie. It's not clear what the cause of the shooting was.
