Oscar Nominations Will Be Announced On Monday. Will They Be More Inclusive This Year?
The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards finally come out early Monday morning.
And it’s not just the delayed time of 2021’s Oscars that’s overdue…there’s also some social reckoning that’s been sluggish.
A year ago, just one non-white performer--”Harriet’s” Cynthia Erivo--was among the 20 Academy Award acting nominees. And there’s only been one woman--ever--who’s won the best director Oscar: Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker” more than a decade ago.
This time around, the nominations--and winners--might look a lot different.
As many as half of all the actors among this year’s nominees might not be white. Those expected to be shortlisted include the late Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis from “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and Daniel Kaluuya for “Judas and the Black Messiah.”
When it comes to female directors, “Nomadland” will almost certainly collect a nomination for filmmaker Chloe Zhao, and two other women could be nominated in the category.
