LA County Reports 1,936 New COVID Cases, 82 Deaths

L.A. County health officials on Sunday confirmed 1,936 new cases of coronavirus and 82 new deaths. Currently, there are 3,280 people hospitalized with COVID-19, and 30% of them are in an ICU.
Today’s update brings the total number of cases to 1,166,538, and deaths to 19,066.
On Friday, L.A. County’s public health director said that cases are leveling off locally, indicating that the surge in positive tests that followed the holiday season is likely coming to an end. Barbara Ferrer added that schools may soon reach the necessary metrics to reopen, but LAUSD officials reiterated that many details have yet to be ironed out to make that possible.
Meanwhile, vaccination sites run by the city have run out of doses and will be closed until Tuesday or Wednesday. Sites run by L.A. County are only offering second doses throughout this week.
Smaller locations offering the vaccine are more likely to still have shots available for first doses.
California health officials announced Friday that beginning in mid-March, people between the ages of 16 and 64 will be eligible for the vaccine if they have one of a number of serious health conditions, or a developmental or other disability that increases their risk of severe illness from COVID-19 infection.
