LA County Hits Another Single-Day Record As Total Coronavirus Cases Top 500,000

For the second day in a row, Los Angeles County has shattered its daily COVID-19 case record.
Officials today logged another 13,815 cases, after reporting more than 12,000 cases late yesterday. That now brings the county's cumulative total since the beginning of the pandemic to over half a million cases.
Meanwhile, more than 3,600 people are currently hospitalized, which county public health director Barbara Ferrer says is the result of surging cases from over the Thanksgiving holiday:
"The impact of this Thanksgiving surge of cases on top of already rising cases, is creating extraordinary stress on our health care system. Should this be followed by another surge related to the winter holiday, the numbers of hospitalizations and patients in the ICU could become catastrophic."
The county could receive more than 82,000 doses as soon as Monday, with this first batch reserved for health care workers, Supervisor Janice Hahn said via Twitter.
About 250,000 more doses could arrive by Dec. 21, 150,000 the week after that, and then 250,000 per week starting in January, she wrote.
