  • Classic films in a van in Santa Monica
A white van parked next to the beach says "The Criterion Closet" in black on the side
The Criterion Closet, beloved by cinephiles.

    Topline:

The Criterion Closet — the cinephile paradise where you can browse among the company's 1000-plus classic movies — is coming to the Aero Theater in Santa Monica on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Why it matters: Because nothing matters more than the movies, and you can peruse more than 1,000 Criterion Collection’s classic and contemporary films inside the Criterion Closet van. Celebrities like Diego Luna and Natasha Lyonne have helped the whole experience go viral by posting their picks from inside the closet.

Why now: Criterion is celebrating its 40th anniversary by converting a van and going on a national tour.

The rules: A visit to the Criterion Closet is free and no reservation is needed. There’s a three-minute limit per visit. You can enter alone or with up to four friends. And yes, you can record a selfie video.

What's next: The visit by the Criterion Collection coincides with Bleak Week at the American Cinematheque at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica.
