  • Famous football coach is returning to USC
A man with short graying hair is wearing a red and gold jacket and holding both hands in the air in peace sign gestures. He's standing in some kind of stadium at night, surrounded by football players in red and gold uniforms.
Head coach Pete Carroll of the USC Trojans celebrates after defeating the Boston College Eagles during the Emerald Bowl at AT&T Park on Dec. 26, 2009, in San Francisco.

    Topline:

Pete Carroll, USC’s former head football coach who left to lead the Seattle Seahawks, is returning to the university this spring.

Why it matters: But Carroll is expected to be in the classroom teaching students this time around, he told KJR-FM in an interview. When asked about coaching again, Carroll said he could do it tomorrow, but he’s “not desiring it.”

Why now: He didn’t go into the details, adding that he’s “keeping it undercover here for a bit,” but he described it as an exciting endeavor that he’s looking forward to.

The backstory: Throughout his nine years at the university, Carroll led the Trojans to seven straight Pac-10 titles and two national championships.

What's next: “We are excited to welcome Pete Carroll home to USC in a new capacity in which he can, as a legendary coach and leader, share his knowledge and experience with our students,” USC said in a statement. “We are working on the details and hope to share more specifics later.”
