  • Algae bloom has made water toxic. Stay away
A yellow caution sign reads: Beware of hazards, water level changing. Next to it are two orange traffic cones and beyond is an expanse of water, with hills behind showing evidence of higher previous water levels.
A water danger advisory has been issued at Castaic Lake.

    Topline:

The state Department of Water Resources is urging people to avoid physical contact with the water in Castaic Lake until further notice. A blue-green algae bloom has formed and can cause serious health problems. They also advise avoiding eating fish or shellfish from the lake.

Why it matters: The blue-green algae, known as cyanobacteria, can cause rashes, mouth ulcers, vomiting, diarrhea, and cold- and flu- like symptoms. Animals and children are especially affected.

Why now: The California Department of Water Resources took a sample from Castaic Lake this week and results showed an increase in toxin levels.

What you can and cannot do: Boating is allowed, but avoid water contact like wading and sport activities. Avoid eating fish and shellfish from the lake. The advisory is in place for all of Castaic Lake, except for Castaic Lagoon.

What are blue-green algae blooms?: They look like streaks on the surface of the water, usually blue, green, or brown. They have a septic-like smell. Blue-green algae, are the first known organisms to produce oxygen and while they're called algae, they're actually a type of bacteria.
