It appears San Marino Mayor Dennis Kneier did indeed flush his career down the proverbial toilet when he threw that bag of dog poop in his neighbor's yard.
Poopgate is the scandal that would lay waste to Kneier's career. On June 7, Kneier's neighbor, Philip Lao, caught the politician throwing a bag of dog poop into his yard. Lao believed that Kneier did this intentionally due to Lao's vocal opposition of dog poop which included placing a "No Poop Zone" sign in his yard and opposing a proposed dog park.
After a citation for littering and much embarrassment, Kneier has decided to resign as mayor, City News Service reports.
Vice Mayor Eugene Sun will fill in as mayor until June 27. At that point, the City Council—which Kneier will remain a member of—will choose a new mayor and vice mayor.
Sun issued this statement: "This has been a challenging few days for our city and we're hopeful that with Kneier's decision, and with his public and private expressions of regret for the incident, we can move forward."
Yes, San Marino, 63rd richest zipcode in America. You will rebuild.
