The War on Gay Christmas: Vandals Tear Down Church's Same-Sex Nativity Scene

Vandals have torn down a gay nativity scene at a church this weekend, and local investigators are treating the incident as a hate crime.

The nativity scene portrayed at Claremont United Methodist Church isn't traditional at all: there are no shepherds, no virginal Mary and no baby Jesus — just three modern-looking silhouettes of couples that appear to be gay, lesbian and straight with the words "Christ is Born" and the Star of Bethlehem overhead.

The church's reverend Dan Lewis explained the thinking behind the nativity scene to KTLA: "We do believe that Christ is in the world for the outcasts and not for the privileged and so each year we want to represent that through our nativity scene."

The vandal knocked down the same-sex couples and left the heterosexual couple standing, which leads the church and investigators to believe that, yes, the vandals were specifically offended by the gayness of the nativity scene. That surprised the reverend because Claremont is a progressive college town. Of course, this being a progressive college town, the church has decided to leave the vandalized nativity as-is calling it "an evolving piece of artwork."

This isn't the first time someone tried to "de-gay" Christmas: a music teacher in Michigan removed the word "gay" from "Deck the Halls," which inspired Conan O'Brien to come up with a new canon of totally straight Christmas carols.

They can join the club cause ever since theres been teenagers and beer, Nativity scenes have been getting vandalised  . At least the Gays have more juice  when the law kicks in. Those  sucker Christians dont have the special crime status. As if it wasnt already a hateful act purported upon everybody.

I think everyone should be able to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior- Jesus Christ. . . Gays; Heterosexuals; Transsexuals; Hermaphrodites; Transvestites; Transgenders;  -and Yes. . . even  Necrophiles, Pedophiles, and those among us of the Zoophilia (Bestiality) persuasion. . .  Because Every Christian One of Us should be seeking Salvation and be Saved by our Lord and Savior in the hereafter . . .  and beyond!!

  • That's a bold statement.

  • JacksBacks

Yes- and I left out the 'Transponders'. . .
because I didn't want to offend those among us of the Aviation persuasion!

  • No, the statement is in bold

There could still be an XMas: they would have adopted a baby boy named Jesus.

  • Slash13

if mary and joeseph were 2 dudes there would be no Christmas.

  • rcltrh

I don't recall Joseph being involved in this fairytale at all

  • PrettyAmiable

    Though I think he watched

  • But it would have worked out just fine had they been two chicks.

And we're talking God here. An illigimate birth very well could have been worked into to an adoption.

Dan Lewis has an IQ of a shoe.

  • robingee

Vandals just do things to be destructive. Then they get to see their handiwork on the news and they get huge boners.

  • scooterj2003

It's what Jesus would have done.

  • garnetlove

    Sigh.

  • KaliKross

As Reverend Lewis says: it has evolved.

As Reverend Lewis says: it has evolved.

  • The most astounding thing for me has always been the sheer number of people claiming that book as some manual of life who evidently have never read it.

Edit for clarification: I specifically mean the part about "Love thy neighbor" as opposed to any requirement that a stable be depicted.

  • whiteiris

Maybe if progressive idiots stop trying to turn Christian traditions and or beliefs into their own version then people wouldn't have to resort to crap like this.

  • scooterj2003

Wow, you're right!  If only we could see what a real nativity scene by real Christians looked like.

  • lazydazy

You have to admit, that is very cute.

  • Progressive idiot I may be, I'm just taking lines from the book. Are you saying Jesus didn't really mean it when he said "love they neighbor" or "Judge not lest ye be judged"?

  • Roger_the_Shrubber

Love thy neighbor doesn't mean have sex with thy neighbor.

  • randomtransplant

"Thou shall not covet thy neighbors wife" is not the issue at hand.

  • Nor does it mean destroy their property.

Also, there's that whole judge not lest ye be judged thing.

  • robingee

Irrelevant. Has nothing to do with anything.

  • DonKeysHoTea

is that a gay nativity scene, or just a gay scene? don't you sort of need a baby jesus, or something?
new TV reality show! "Queer Eye For the 3 Wise Guys"
"Oh. My God. That whole robe and turban thing- that HAS to go, honey. This is Bethlehem, not Animal House- you've got such mysterious middle-eastern eyes- let's make them really POP!"

  • scooterj2003

Basically every part of Christianity is up for interpretation because much of it is based on myths and oral tradition.  So it's kinda strange to require nativity scenes to follow some sort of necessary standard.  Nobody knows if the nativity scene as we imagine it in our culture ever even existed.

  • angry_pickle

Is this a joke?  It's a written tradition as far as I know.

  • scooterj2003

    myths and oral tradition

na·tiv·i·ty  (n-tv-t, n-)n. pl. na·tiv·i·ties1. Birth, especially the place, conditions, or circumstances of being born.2. Nativitya. The birth of Jesus.b. A representation, such as a painting, of Jesus just after birth.c. Christmas.

Tell me where in this "nativity" scene is there any depiction of birth? Jesus or otherwise.

  • scooterj2003

Look, I'm not the one who built this thing and then called it a nativity scene.  I'm sure if you emailed the reverend he'd be able to explain his rationale.  I believe the idea is that Jesus can be associated with gay people just as he has been associated with flying angels, magic balls of light, camels and the like. You tell me which one seems a little off kilter.

It is worth noting that the sign does say "Christ is born." Do you think this qualifies as a representation of Christ's birth?

It's really quite interesting that people find this kind of thing objectionable, but don't seem to have a problem with Christmas being co-opted by multinational retailers as a way to make a quick buck at the expense of the poor and vulnerable. Not really seeing vandals defacing Wal Mart are we? But, god forbid, the homosexuals! They are the true enemy of Christmas tradition.

  • You know, any good Christian should be able to point out that the only time the book showed Jesus committing vandalism was when he saw people using the temple to make money. Of course, there are obvious reasons they'd prefer to ignore that particular part of the message.

  • PrettyAmiable

Jesus can be associated with anyone, if I'm reading the religion right. Dude hung out with the poor, disabled, hookers, etc. Of course, none of those were nativity scenes either.

  • Roger_the_Shrubber

    That's no nativity scene.

That said, I don't condone vandalizing it.

  • aspiringrapper

Yeah, maybe they just had a thing against revisionist history?

Still, destruction of property is wrong.
