LAst Night's Action: The So Cal Hockey Suckage Edition
St. Louis Blues defeat LA Kings 6-4. The game didn’t go to a shootout, but it certainly was a shootout at the Scottrade Center in the Gateway to the West. The Blues offensively was on their game in the first two periods outshooting the Kings 24-17, yet it was tied 4-4.
The Kings remarkably scored twice on the power-play in six chances, however both came due to a five-on-three situation: the first goal by Ryan Smyth at 16:59 in the first period while officially on a five-on-four situation came just as Dave Scatchard came out of the penalty box. The other was by Anze Kopitar 2:00 in the second period to take the 2-1 lead.
And that second period was just an all out offensive assault as Vladimir Sobotka, Brad Winchester and Eric Brewer scored consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead before the Kings rallied back to tie things up on Wayne Simmonds and Dustin Brown goals late in the period.
The Kings them seemed to take advantage in the third period as fatigue seemed to set with the Blues who lost to the Detroit Red Wings the night before. However a face off loss in the Blues zone by the Kings allowed the Blues to rush the ice giving Alexander Steen the winning goal at 17:07. David Backes iced the game with an empty netter power-play goal in the final minute.
The Kings now put their tails between their legs and head off to Nashville Saturday night.
New York Islanders defeat Anaheim Ducks 3-2. Maybe the Ducks took the Islanders lightly. Maybe the Ducks were a bit slow to start the game after their overtime win against Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. But the three Islanders goals in the first period killed the Ducks.
In a one minute, 39 second span late in the first period PA Parenteau, Blake Comeau and Matt Moulsen knocked goalie Curtis McElhinney out of the game forcing Jonas Hiller to cut short his night off. While McElhinney was just plain beat in those goals, the Ducks blue line didn’t help things out - a sloppy careless giveaway to Moulsen leading to the last goal.

Joffrey Lupul and Jason Blake scored goals in the second and third periods to try and get the Ducks back in the game, but Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro was all over the crease stopping almost everything that came his way.
The Ducks now head off to Raleigh to face the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday night.
