The Blue Line is notoriously known as most accident prone train in the city, if not the nation. Incidents involving cars and pedestrians make headlines quite often. In fact, the problem was enough to push Metro, L.A. County Sheriff's Deputies and LAPD to go on a public safety awareness campaign today, meaning they saturated an area of the light rail line and cited violator after violator.
In a four hour period this morning beginning at 7 a.m., 330 citations and 30 warning were given between the Washington Station and 7th/Metro Center, where there are no gates at rail crossings. 24 vehicles were also impounded.
Officers focused on red light runners, illegal left turns--the cause most often cited in train-vehicle accidents--and pedestrian jaywalking. "While there has been a steady decline in train versus vehicle accidents on the Metro Blue Line," explained Metro in a press release, "the level of pedestrian accidents has remained stagnant."
