Billboard Art Alert: Dust on La Cienega
That billboard on La Cienega between Washington and Venice might look like the galaxy, but it's actually a photographic abstraction called Dust. "Our desire for the billboard is that it will read to different viewers as an aesthetic intervention in the public domain that is a curiosity," explained Lauri Firstenberg, Director/Curator of LAXART where the billboard is located, to LAist.
This weekend, Firstenberg's gallery will debut a new show featuring photography-artist Walead Beshty called Passages. His art is very much about the life and process an object goes through such as the series of passed-through-airport-x-ray-machine photos that will be exhibited. "The photographs from this series index their own traffic in washes of color and line, offering images of the limbo of air travel which directly represent these sites while resisting determined pictorial depiction of conventional photographic imagery," LAXART materials explain.
At last year's Whitney Biennial, one of his works included shatterproof safety glass boxes that he shaped to perfectly fit in the standard sized FedEx box (did you know you can copyright box size?). He then shipped them and displayed the damaged and cracked shatterproof glass. Video of them and the photographic process below.
