Tour of California Comes to SCV & Pasadena: Where to Watch & Street Closures

Noon tomorrow is the beginning of the Tour of California's penultimate stage, which is the only portion of the race that goes through the Los Angeles region. And with Lance Armstrong making a comeback, expect large crowds.

The 88-mile stage gradually climbs 25 miles from Santa Clarita to Acton before hitting the real hills in the Angeles National Forest. Eventually, they will hit Millcreek Summit at an elevation of 4,906 feet. Then it's 15 miles downhill before heading to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

If you want to see the race at a certain point along the route, check this time chart (.pdf) that shows estimated times of where and when riders will be.

But the major events will be at the start and finish lines. If you're looking for a chance to meet and get autographs, head to Santa Clarita where riders have the time to say hello before their journey begins. Over at the finish line, the Pasadena Convention and Visitors Bureau expects 15,000 to 20,000 people to attend the events at the Rose Bowl, but told the Pasadena Star News it is unlikely that fans will interact with riders. "(Riders) usually leave pretty quickly after the race," they said.

Major Street Closures

The race begins at noon in the Valencia neighborhood of Santa Clarita. A slew of street closures will begin at 11:30 a.m. and last through 12:30 p.m. throughout the city from the Westfield Valencia Town Center southeast to the Sand Canyon area in Canyon Country. All the info can be seen here.

Beginning around 2 p.m., Caltrans will fully close the Angeles Crest Highway as cyclists make their way southbound through the Angeles National Forest towards Pasadena. The 14 Freeway will also experience some periodic closures. Stay tuned to local AM radio traffic reports.

There will be various local street closures in Pasadena and the best way to experience the end of the race is probably at the Rose Bowl. Park at the Memorial Park Gold Line station and use the free shuttles. And yes, there is a bike valet.
