The Official Recession has now been upon us for fourteen official months. It’s still not a reason we can’t enjoy life. This is LA -- we’ve got plenty of inexpensive options! We last ate delicious cheap banh mi. Today's Recession Obsession comes from the sea -- via the deep fryer.
Wallet-friendly meals are quite a hot topic as California unemployment nears 10%. However, let me assure you fine folks, a Recession Obsession is not simply cheap eats. A Recession Obsession is a meal, or activity, that is worthy of patronizing when times are good, because it's that damn good.
When the market is up, I still love the Grand Central Market, and the Koreatown Galleria Foodcourt. But when the market is down, thoughts of such wonderful places quickly move to the front of my mind, producing itches which can be scratched with a few measly George Washingtons.
Best Fish Tacos in Ensenada... Deal
Today’s Recession Obsession is a meal which will happily delight every corner of the palate regardless of your overdrawn checking account. Two fish tacos and a drink is not quite $5. And trust me, they’re amazing.
Baja Southern California
Ensenada, a fishing village in Mexico’s Baja California, is known for tacos de pescado. These tacos -- featuring lightly fried white fish, some shredded cabbage (or lettuce,) salsa, and crema -- are quite adored in Southern California. Perhaps that’s why two of the best fish taco joints pay homage to the Pacific Coast town.
Whittier’s Tacos Baja Enseda makes a mean fish taco. So does Los Feliz’ Best Fish Tacos in Ensenda. The former is a staple on Jonathan Gold’s LA 99 list (one of the cheapest eats on the list) and BFTiE is a newcomer who opened very strong last year. They're homemade salsas are good enough to be sold in stores. Try the hot pineapple salsa, it hurts so good.
For under $5/person a meal awaits which would make most of the country jealous. That's something worth obsessing over.

Senor Fish on Mission in South Pasadena or LA Little Tokyo (E 1st St?) ...
My favorites were at a place in Encinitas which I'm pretty sure was called D.B. Cooper's, but I haven't been there in years. Now I just do the Rubio's Pesky Combo for about $6. It's one of the very few chain food places I eat.
Can't stress enough how fantastic Best Fish Tacos in Ensenada is. So, so delicious and crazy cheap. The salsa bar is one of the best.
taco nazo in la puente, hands down.
Is that like the Soup Nazo from Seinfeld?
Best Fish Tacos in Ensenada is amazing - their shrimp tacos are like crack. And I mean that as a compliment.
La Estrella on Fair Oaks in Pasadena... oh, those tacos de pescado make driving to Pasadena so worth it!

We went to the Best Fish Taco place the other day and it was pretty good. I definitely like the shrimp ones the best topped w/ spicy guac.
