City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo today filed criminal charges against a billboard company and building owners over an illegal sign next to the 10 Freeway. Keep in mind, this is two days after the city held a press conference under the same exact sign saying they were revving up to fight if these don't come down.
World Wide Rush, building owner National Investment Company and eight people--either partial building owners or those doing business under the company's name--were named in court documents for illegally erecting a six-story Tropicana Juice supergraphic sign at 10801 National Blvd. after a city moratorium passed last month.
23 criminal counts in all; if found guilty, they could face up to six months in jail and up to $1,000 for each charge.

It's cool that they are trying to put advertising in check, but what is the difference between doing this, and the signs on top of the building? What if Tropicana owned that building? What if it were an ad for AIG on the side of the building instead of Tropicana?
If you've been following this issue one of the things being said about this style of advertising over others is that is not safe in a fire, and the banners would lift flames from the first floor with the graphic all the way up the banner in no time. Also, people who work or rent spaces in buildings that become "bannerized" (I just made that word up), lose a significant amount of natural light that would otherwise come through the window.
I'll celebrate when I hear it's happened and I see a Perp Walk.
Profit over safety went out with the previous administration.
"Bannerized". Har! Har!
According to FEDERAL law (the highway beautification act of 1965) billboards can't be more than 1200 square feet, less than 250 feet from another sign, and (I think) within 600 feet of an interstate highway (*Cough* I-10). The first 2 laws apply to any sign that can be seen from an interstate highway, which I'm guessing includes most things in Los Angeles.
So basically, I have no idea how they've gotten away with things like this until now.
Will anyone ever do jail time for these crimes? I doubt it. Without real teeth, these laws are jokes. Either arrest the guys who are putting up these illegal signs or shut up.
