Late-Night Snack: Mini Ice Cream Sandwiches

Ice Cream Sandwich

Have you ever made homemade vanilla ice cream? The ingredients are pretty basic: cream, milk, sugar, egg yolks and natural vanilla flavor. But if you want that same taste without having to make it yourself, we've found that Trader Joe's version tastes like homemade versions. In fact, it has all the same ingredients plus two preservatives and that's it -- no long list of unpronounceable colorings and chemicals.

So with a little ice cream laying around and some oatmeal cookie mix in the cabinet, we had to bake up some cookies and make our own delicious version of Westwood Village's Diddy Reese.

oh, Mr Behrens, have you touched a nerve...

I grew up in the Village and migrated eastward for many years, but
would bear the drive from progressively further away to stand in that line and get the goods.

I live in Baltimore now, and if I still had a car I could be there Friday night, tapping my toes in anticipation whilst co-eds in front of me decided which flavor to sandwich.

I'll try the Trader Joe's with my own chocolate-chip cookies, and I thank you for putting me back in L.A. for a moment, with the words 'Diddy' and 'Reese'.

mmmm....

We do this with coconut cookies. Sometimes substituting Butter Pecan for vanilla

You are the master of late-night temptation. You're the devil.

Evil... EEEEVIL. This is exactly why I look like a Hydroxycut "BEFORE' picture.

Oh, yummmmm. I haven't had a Diddy Reise in YEARS, and I work in Westwood.

Speaking of TJ's and ice cream sandwiches -- they also have these really yummy mint chip ones on chocolate wafers (look like Oreos). Those make a good little sweet snack, too.

That healthy scoop of ice cream between two fresh, delicious cookies of your choosing is possibly the best bargain in all of LA. Get it in a bowl or else 25% will drip down your arm, though!

Might have to have one of those after lunch today. Best to visit before all the students return, or on off-weeks between quarters since the line can get kinda long.
