The Sweet Hurt & Obi Best @ Tangier, 8/3/08
Last Sunday, local Alex Lilly's solo project Obi Best (MySpace), formerly known as Colorforms (MySpace), performed the first show of her month-long residency, celebrating the release of her debut album Capcades, at Tangier in Los Feliz.
As described by Spin Magazine, "Under a sprightly, whimsical layer-cake of pianos, synths, and budget drum-machine skitters (provided by a slew of like-minded pals), Lilly's work takes on a circus-esque, twirling quality with its animated, bubbly instrumentation and varied lyrical topics, from lovers to gardens, and beyond. And tracks like the slower, twinkling ballad "Green and White Stripes" and the Stereolab-esque "Blooms Like Flowers" show Lilly's knack for both songwriting and setting an ethereal soundscape."
Also performing that night were The Sweet Hurt (MySpace), Light FM (MySpace), and The Meemies (MySpace).
This Sunday, Obi Best will be joined by b.r.a.m. (MySpace), Whispertown 2000 (MySpace), and The Long Lost (MySpace), followed on August 17th with Mooey Moobau (MySpace), Readers (MySpace), and Johnnie Newman (MySpace), August 24th with The Poor Excuses (MySpace), Jogger (MySpace), and Robert Francis' sister and Hello Stranger frontwoman Juliette Commagere (MySpace), and August 31st with Alex and Sam (MySpace), I Make This Sound (MySpace), and Vosotros.
Special thanks to The Sweet Hurt, Obi Best, and Tangier.
