Hey, You're in a Facebook Ad. Do Not Want?!?

facebook appearance sidebar adsFor the past few months we've noticed our friends randomly appearing in sidebar ads on Facebook and thought, "ZOMG Zuckerberg, are we all being used so you can pick up all of our friends for your third-party app-monkeys?

At left, you see Tom Lewis aka TV Junkie purporting to endorse a Facebook App. Sure, he probably is a Facebook "fan" of the app but we doubt he realizes that his image is being used in this manner on his friends' sidebar. Nice shades, though, Tom.

Turns out there is a way to opt out of appearing in such paid ads for Facebook Apps, although it is not entirely easy to find the opt-out page.

Log-in to Facebook, go to "privacy" at the top right, click "News Feed and Mini-Feed," then select the "Social Ads" tab within the module and change "Appearance in Social Ads" to No One. Anyone else have issues with this?

step one) demand $$$
step two) use $$$ to buy me drinks
step three) use drinks to throw up on hubspot

That's be nice, Timmay but unfortch you basically sign away all of your intellectual property rights when you

a) join facebook; and
b) download any apps; unless
c) you lock down on the privacy settings

ToS -- never a pretty thing.

I'd rather appear in one of those than the 'Muffin Top' or 'Out of shape by 20?' ads.

precisely why i'm not on facebook

next time any one of my friends asks me why I don't sign up for Facebook and why I refuse to sign up for Facebook, I'll send them this entry.
